10 WWE Fan Reactions That Had A Serious Effect On A Wrestler

3. 'What?' (2001)

Stone Cold What
WWE

When 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin first uttered the question 'What?' back in August 2001, fans and future wrestlers alike had no idea what sort of impact it would have on the company as a whole in the years that followed.

After first using the chant to berate Tazz on an episode of SmackDown, the word soon evolved into a piece of fun audience participation and for a while it was yet another powerful 'Stone Cold' weapon.

Then, after Austin rode off into the sunset, the inevitable happened.

We lost the 'Texas Rattlesnake' but we retained a fan reaction which worked wonders when paired with the brash former World Champion, however it turned into one of the single most annoying words in the English language when used outside of that context.

To this day, WWE Superstars still struggle to get through promos without the WWE Universe feeling the need to pose the question 'What?' during each natural pause for air/thought.

Austin may have been a master of crowd manipulation, but by provoking the thousands in attendance into chanting along with his sarcastic one word probing sessions he seriously affected the next generation's attempts to get over on a WWE microphone.
