10 WWE Gimmicks That Were Basically Just Rip-Offs

2. The Genius/Damien Sandow

Damien Sandow Damien Sandow is a great talent. However, his gimmick feels a bit dated. That's probably because it's right out of 1989. That was the year that the brother of Randy Savage was no longer "Leaping" Lanny Poffo, and instead became a Genius. He was a bearded, brilliant and arrogant man who talked down to the audience and fellow superstars. He was also mainly a jobber. For the most part, he was a joke except for when he was the manager of Mr. Perfect. Overall, it was a pretty forgetabble gimmick, that is remembered for being more silly than anything else. For some reason, it was good enough to bring back over 20 years later. When Sandow debuted, he was in full Genius mode. He wore pink tights to the ring, performed a cartwheel after his matches, but instead wore a robe instead of a gown. He too talked down to the audience, and claimed to be their intellectual savior. Sure, he didn't throw Frisbees to the crowd like The Genius, but the two could have been brothers. Luckily for Sandow, he reached heights that Poffo never did. This is probably because Sandow slowly started dropping his Genius traits like the cartwheel and the robe and at least tried to become a bit more serious (when he's not battling Mark Henry in a Santa outfit that is). That was a smart move on his part.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
