10 WWE Gimmicks That Were Basically Just Rip-Offs

8. Renegade/Ultimate Warrior

Renegae W After Hulk Hogan arrived in WCW, fans couldn't wait to see who else was going to join him. His old friend, and sometimes foe, Randy Savage also made the jump, and shortly after it seemed that a possible trifecta of the WWF's top babyfaces were now the property of WCW. Hogan and Savage were engaged in a heated feud with The Dungeon of Doom when Hogan announced he had an "ultimate surprise" for them. Ultimate? It had to be Ultimate Warrior right? At least that's what fans thought. And really, it was the only thing that made sense. The charismatic, and controversial star had been out of the spotlight for some time, so a return was feeling inevitable. Well, Warrior did not come to WCW (until a few years later). Instead, a guy that vaguely resembled him (if you saw him from a mile away) joined Hogan's team. He was The Renegade. But he was really just The Ultimate Ripoff. He wore the same type of outfit, had colorful face paint, used a similar theme song, had the same finishing move and ran to the ring like a maniac just like Warrior. Unfortunately for him, he had another similarity with Warrior: he was terrible in the ring. Unlike Warrior, though, he didn't have the charisma to make up for it. Fans out-right rejected this third rate knockoff, and while he did capture the TV title, that's as far as he got. His big push fizzled, and he was reduced to jobber status for the rest of his run.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
