10 WWE Gimmicks That Were Basically Just Rip-Offs

4. The Beautiful People/LayCool

Mlmm Stealing ideas doesn't always go one way. For any fan watching TNA and WWE in 2008, they may have found an odd similarity between TNA's The Beautiful People (Angelina Love and Velvet Sky) and WWE's LayCool (Layla El and Michelle McCool). Now, both seem to be heavily inspired by the film Mean Girls, but TNA got there first. They also did it better. This isn't to say that Vince McMahon himself ripped off TNA (he probably doesn't watch their show anyway), but it seems pretty clear that someone in WWE creative was inspired by what was going on in their (minor) competition. In 2008, Love and Sky turned heel and formed The Beautiful People. They were out to insult anyone they thought who was uglier than them, which was basically the entire Knockouts division. It was a pretty entertaining act. So entertaining, that McCool and Layla formed their own version early the next year. The two joined forces and set out to humiliate Mickie James, by making fun of her looks and her weight. They were vein, snarky and full of themselves. On Impact, The Beautiful People were insulting the looks of others and putting paper bags over their heads. Both groups had a similar way of talking, and it felt like they all could have been in the same stable. LayCool was okay, but the act was being performed much better over in TNA. It's too bad that the better duo didn't get the attention they deserved.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
