10 WWE Gimmicks Changes That Failed Dismally

5. Chavo Guerrero To Kerwin White

The Guerrero family are one of the most famous wrestling families, and Chavo Guerrero Jr is a third-generation member of that family. If you see a Guerrero in the ring, you know you€™re in for a good match. Chavo had enjoyed success in Los Guerreros tag team with his uncle Eddie, winning the WWE World Tag Team titles as well as the hearts of the WWE audience. In 2004, the team split, with Chavo turning heel and feuding with Eddie. Once this feud had run its course, WWE creative scratched its collective head, wondering what to do with Chavo. They came up with a horrendously racist gimmick called Kerwin White. The name Kerwin came from a WWE employee who was about to retire, so effectively, Chavo was part of an inside rib by the company. After being attacked by the Mexicools (another politically correct gimmick), Chavo renounced his Mexican heritage, renamed himself Kerwin White, dyed his hair blond and drove a golf cart to the ring as a symbol of narrow minded, middle class America. He denounced any ethnic minority on the roster, whether they were black, Hispanic, Asian or otherwise. It was truly embarrassing and one can only imagine how uncomfortable Chavo must have felt portraying it. Fate took a hand in ending the Kerwin White gimmick however. When Chavo discovered his uncle Eddie dead in his hotel room in November 2005, it was Chavo and Vince McMahon who faced the press to announce his passing. The Kerwin White gimmick was dropped as if it had never existed, and Chavo reverted to his real name, continuing the Guerrero legacy. Chavo enjoyed a brief run near the top of the card after Eddie€™s death but then fell back down to the middle of the card again. If it hadn€™t been for Eddie€™s tragic passing, the Kerwin White gimmick could have done real damage to Chavo€™s career and legacy.
