The best way to describe Eugene during his four year run on WWE's main roster from 2004 to 2007 was that he was a really dumb guy that didn't know he was dumb or that people were laughing at him, not with him. In many ways, Nick Dinsmore deserves a lot of credit for making the gimmick work to the point that he was very popular with the fans. While WWE didn't want to say Eugene had mental problems, that was always the insinuation. They didn't call him a "handicapped" or "retarded" or some term that was offensive, but that's what they were going for without ever saying it. That part about not being serious makes it puzzling why Triple H would feud with him and have a match with him at SummerSlam 2004. Not only that, but they went 15 minutes too. The gimmick didn't get too far after that. There were actually rumors that Eugene was going to turn heel by saying the whole gimmick was just a ruse put on by his "uncle" Eric Bischoff. It would have made him a massive heel. No idea if the rumor was true, but they never did the heel turn with him. When Eugene won a match, it was considered a fluke. He actually became a tag team champion with William Regal too. People laughed at him, though. The character was never meant to be serious.
