10 WWE Heels Who Were Absolutely RIGHT!
7. The Rock (1997)
Big pop for fans who were shocked that a young upstart rookie like Rocky Maivia didn't like hearing chants/seeing signs like, "Rocky Sucks" or, "Die, Rocky, Die!". After rehabbing an injury that gave him a reprieve from such hatred, Rocky turned heel on everyone and linked up with Faarooq's villainous Nation Of Domination in the summer of 1997.
Suck it, haters.
One promo was all Maivia needed to explain his thinking. He pointed out that it was the WWF fans who turned on him, so now he was lashing back at them. He needed some backup instead of being a smiling babyface loner who didn't even have support from the people he wrestled to entertain.
The "Die, Rocky, Die" stuff understandably horrified him. How could someone who was only a few years (at most) into his career be expected to smile through that hatred? Overnight, The Rock elected to reject the same folks who had already rejected him, and they despised him for it.
Greatness was born.
