'The Hounds Of Justice' and 'The Dogs Of War' risked chasing their own tails as a slightly indulgent tag team title war looked to linger too long, but an exceptional final third made up for flabbier forays.

The closing sequence of spots between Drew, Dolph, Dean and D... Seth were reminders of everything the quartet could do on their best collective day, because this was it. Sharpened by the quality on show in the SmackDown Live! Kickoff match, the glory days of 2017 were briefly revisited by the Raw quartet with a series of spots leading to Drew McIntyre's Claymore scoring the slightly fortuitous win for Braun's mutts.

The six-man main events that will gradually bore us all to death by Christmas can now begin in earnest, but at least one excellent match has justified their existence. It's worth remembering that by the time the heels are taking bumps in Santa Claus outfits because Father Reigns has castigated them for being "very naughty boys" at the babyface locker room Christmas party. Those Raw tag titles, red-leather and all, haven't yet escaped the comedic cul-de-sac.
