10 WWE-Like Moments In Real Sport

9. Football - Sunderland vs. Liverpool 2009

A two-for-one on wrestling tropes here, with an unsighted outside interference, and a nod to the beach ball in WWE crowds phenomenon of a few years back.

Liverpool in 2009 weren’t quite the all-conquering team they are now, and would go onto struggle in the ‘09/‘10 season, parting company with manager Rafa Benitez at the end of the campaign. Nonetheless, they had enough to keep Steve Bruce’s Sunderland pinned back in the early stages, and the referee’s attention firmly focused on the Sunderland goal.

In the meantime, a young Liverpool fan had unwittingly sowed the seeds for his team’s defeat by projecting a club branded inflatable ball just in front of the largely untroubled Reds goal. In a rare attack, England striker Darren Bent would see a tame effort deflect in via Sunderland’s new, spherical forward. The Black Cats would go on to smother Liverpool for the rest of the game in a 1-0 win.
