Practicality and pragmatism over pomp, this one. Matt Hardy was battling rather difficult drug and alcohol demons for much of the mid-2000s, yet found himself actually finding himself as a revived figure on WWE's tepid ECW when he was sent there as something of a mentor figure in 2008.

Defeating the seemingly-unstoppable Mark Henry for the strap, Hardy went on to prosper with the prize all the way through to putting Jack Swagger over for it several months later. Presenting the veneer of being a veteran then, he's legitimately one now. Since The Hardy Boyz made their incredible WrestleMania return in 2017, Hardy's proved capable of playing any version of his character, and even allowed his Broken Universe to be reimagined by the organisation in a noble attempt to get Bray Wyatt over before the man himself put a chainsaw through the gimmick.

Hardy has limitless credibility at this point, is in magnificent shape and, somehow, is totally surplus to requirements on Raw and SmackDown. He could also bring with him some one of even greater pedigree for new stars to make their name defeating...
