Finlay is a master of the brawling style and his tough-man aura was enough to get him over as a character worthy of the squared circle. Booking the 'Belfast Brawler' with his own leprechaun shouldn't have worked, but the low hanging stereotype gimmick benefited both men.

Hornswoggle assisted Finley to defeat Bobby Lashley for the United States Championship, which he held for 49 days. Backstage, Finlay was instrumental to Hornswoggle's induction to WWE. He revealed Finlay "has always loved [him] as much as if [he] was his own son".

Nevertheless, the partnership was quietly abandoned in favour of ‘Swoggle being cast as Vince McMahon's illegitimate son. It was here that the smaller man's popularity, or at least exposure, rose. It was this bizarre storyline that eclipsed his work as a manager.

The duo were reunited when it was revealed that Finlay was Hornswoggle's “true” father. Although, a brand switch again ended the alliance.

While Finlay entered semi-retirement (focusing on being a trainer and agent), 'Swoggle's star continued to rise on Raw when he became DX's official mascot. Other angles were plain dumb, such as feuding with Jack Swagger's Soaring Eagle and falling victim to Natalya's gas, though, these skits kept him in the spotlight for going on a decade.
