10 WWE Match-Ups That Were Better In Another Promotion
1. AJ Styles Vs. Kurt Angle
Another missed opportunity from the Angle retirement storyline.
Angle and Styles had a storied run in TNA as ferocious opponents. Their rivalry served a perfect narrative with Styles being touted as Mr. TNA, taking on Kurt Angle, WWE's former top talent. They clashed stylistically, with Styles being a high flying athlete and Angle being a grounded technician, as evidenced by their Last Man Standing match at Hard Justice '08 where Styles uses the barricade, launching himself at Angle, only to be caught and suplexed into it.
WWE could have put on this performance at WM 35 as a perfect sendoff to Angle. But they thought that Corbin really needed that rub.
Instead they used the match as another tune-up for Angle, with Styles entering the ring and taking a few moves before Randy Orton ran in to end the match in a disqualification before it could get going, satisfying no one.
While WWE can spend all the money in their pockets to raid talent from other promotions, it does them no good to keep those workers buried down the card in favour of their own projects. Sometimes, the best thing for wrestling is for wrestlers to be given what they need without having to worry about giving Vince McMahon what he wants.
