10 WWE Matches John Cena Should Have Lost

7. Vs. Alberto Del Rio (Night Of Champions 2011)

Alberto Del Rio’s first run in the company started well enough. He feuded with the likes of Rey Mysterio and Christian, won the Royal Rumble, and was a major player in the World Heavyweight Championship scene on SmackDown, before being drafted to Raw, winning Money In The Bank, and cashing in at SummerSlam 2011 on a beaten down CM Punk to win the WWE Championship almost a year after his debut. He did manage a successful title defence against Mysterio on the following Raw, but he never passed the one month mark with his first reign. Enter Mr. Cena at Night of Champions.

Cena picked up the win clean over Mexico’s Greatest Export, making Del Rio look like something of a transitional champion. This belief was reinforced when Alberto won the title back in a triple threat at Hell In A Cell, only to lose it again one month and two PPVs later to CM Punk. Perhaps if Del Rio had kept hold of the title from SummerSlam through to Survivor Series, he might not have such a reputation of being a weak champion.

The only reason why this wasn’t so was because WWE wanted to make Cena the first ever 10-time WWE Champion. But really, he would’ve gotten there eventually. Did it really have to come at the cost of an international star’s reputation?
