10 WWE Matches John Cena Should Have Lost

4. Vs. Zack Ryder (Raw, December 5, 2011)

Now, I’m not saying that the Long Island Iced Z should’ve beat Cena clean (although could you imagine the pop!), but given the stakes and circumstances of the match itself, perhaps Ryder beating Big Match John could’ve been a welcome notion.

The stipulation was that if Cena won, he would’ve been added to a TLC match for the WWE Championship with CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio, and The Miz. A Ryder victory would’ve given him a one-on-one US Title match against Dolph Ziggler at the TLC PPV. Cena pinned Ryder clean after an AA, but seeing Ryder lose his long awaited opportunity to conclude the Ryder Revolution of 2011, Cena gave up his title shot to give the Internet Champion a shot at an actual WWE Championship. Cena then helped his ally beat Mark Henry in a No-DQ match. Cena wound up with all the glory, and Ryder looked more like a passenger than someone who earned his way to a title match.

It didn’t have to be that way, however. Instead, WWE should’ve had Miz and Del Rio interfere in the match to try and eliminate Cena from their match, and have Ryder, unknowingly, take advantage of the situation with a fluke roll up. While it does make Ryder look a bit of a heel, a simple handshake from Cena could’ve remedied that, and Ryder could’ve felt like he earned his place fighting for a championship. And if Cena wasn’t going to fight for the WWE title in the end anyway, he didn’t need the momentum of a victory.

Just one of many ways the Cenation leader hampered the Ryder Revolution.
