10 WWE Mid-Carders Who Never Get The Credit They Deserve

5. Val Venis

If only this supremely talented Canadian had been handed a different gimmick, the story of Val Venis could be a very different one.

Almost hampered as much as he was helped by the porn star character penned for him, the obvious charisma, solid in-ring skills, and marketable, handsome look of Venis should have turned him into a top star. Sadly, the comedic nature of the porn gimmick held him back from being anything above mid-card.

When Venis shed the adult film star image in 2000, it didn't seem like creative had anything substantial for him post-Right To Censor either, and that held him back further. A perfect scenario would have been the exploration of something different from the outset, rather than relying on sex to sell Val as a one-note gimmick.

Despite the tawdry nature of his character, Venis could go inside the ring. His success came in spite of the low-rent gimmick, rather than because of it. There's a fair chance he wouldn't be on this list if he hadn't been the WWF's own version of Ron Jeremy.
