10 WWE Moments Everyone Was Waiting For (That Never Happened)

2. The John Cena Heel Turn

10 Biggest WWE Missed Opportunities To Turn John Cena Heel

Ask John Cena himself, and obviously I can because as a global wrestling personality he is in my inner circle of close personal friends and confidants, and he’ll tell that this actually happened. Look, here he is talking directly to me and definitely not GQ.

Anyway, thousands and thousands of people chanting "John Cena Sucks" is one thing, but the actual bonafide heel turn is quite another. At the height of his powers Cena was in a repetitive cycle of defending WWE against groups that would seek to harm it. This was ground for a heel turn more fertile than Ric Flair’s bedsheets in the '80s.

He could have been recruited by Bray Wyatt, he could have embraced the hate with Kane, he could have joined The Nexus for real, he could have beaten the streak, he could have done a double turn with Orton, but he never did. WWE instead went full viva forever on tweener Cena.

Quite what the landscape of the company would have looked like had they fully turned him is open to debate. Arguably a lot of the mid-'00s also-rans would have had a shot at the very, very top of the card and WWE's now cemented ideology of just doing whatever they like might not have been so fully committed to.
