The game efforts of both Bret Hart and Yokozuna were undone by Hulk Hogan's insecurity and Vince McMahon's inhibitions on a confused and difficult night in April 1993.

A year on from teasing Hogan's retirement, McMahon and 'The Hulkster' were working together again, albeit in a diminished capacity for Hulk as he moved into the tag team ranks alongside Brutus Beefcake. At least, that's what he was supposed to be doing.

Casting a shadow so large that even Yokozuna couldn't be seen under it, Hogan knew the power he still held in WWE's ranks, and elected to flex his political muscles on the biggest night of the year. After 'The Hitman' had cruelly and cheaply lost the title thanks to a hearty blast of ceremonial salt in the eyes from Mr Fuji, Hogan came out to 'console his best friend', only to steal an instant title shot thanks to the idiotic bombast of Yoko's devious manager.

Conflicting anecdotes from the main parties have muddied the waters on the intended follow-up to the slapdash presentation masquerading as a WrestleMania show-closing spectacle, but Bret Hart always maintained that Hulk was always expected to drop the title to him conclusively as part of a mammoth SummerSlam main event. By the time the August classic rolled around, Hogan had already left.

Only appearing once in a televised WWE match after WrestleMania, Hulk even disparaged the belt on Japanese television before laying down for the Sumo star at June's maiden King Of The Ring pay-per-view.
