10 WWE PPVs That Couldn't Follow Their Opening Match
5. Battleground 2014 - The Wyatt Family vs. The Usos
Although enthralling tag matches like The Rockers vs. The Orient Express come along once in a blue moon these days, Battleground 2014 was certainly the site of a modern-day resurgence. The Usos took on Luke Harper and Eric Rowan in an immense 2/3 Falls match - one which was given a good 20 minutes, and repaid WWE's faith by blossoming into a mouthwatering spectacle. This match can be seen as Harper's big league coming-of-age, after years of tearing through the indie scene under the name of Brodie Lee. Although nowhere near his partner's league in terms of talent, Rowan plays his more limited role to perfection, while both Usos are on tip-top form. Like the opening match of the 1991 Royal Rumble, this bout utterly stole the show - and significantly dampened the crowd's enthusiasm for the rest of the card in the process. However, not all blame can be placed at the feet of an overly-hot opener. The rapidly-anticipated Rollins vs. Ambrose encounter was called off for storyline reasons, as Triple H ejected Dean from the building earlier in the show - robbing the crowd of an advertised match. Elsewhere, emerging superstar Bray Wyatt suffered a momentum-stalling loss to Chris Jericho, while the PPV ended with John Cena retaining his WWE Championship in disappointingly predictable fashion.
