3. Did Randy Savage Want To Retire After WrestleMania 7?
From @nolan0071: Just wondering did Randy Savage genuinely want to retire after WrestleMania 7 or was it an angle?
It was all part of the angle. As most fans know, Savage lost a memorable Career Match against The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania 7 in 1991. Savage went into the match as the heel Macho King that the fans hated for a few years, but by the end of the night he was cheered because he was reunited with the love of his life, Elizabeth. Savage was 38 years old at the time of the match, so he really wasn't that old. For comparisons sake, he was only a year older than John Cena and Brock Lesnar are today. It was just part of the storyline to sell the idea that the loser had to retire for good. He actually worked some WWE live events post WrestleMania with WWE telling fans that he had to fulfill his contract for dates he was advertised for. Perhaps he had some nagging injuries that he wanted to heal up too. That could have been part of it. They brought him back into storylines at SummerSlam 1991 when he got married to Elizabeth (in the storyline - they were already married in real life) and Jake Roberts tormented with snakes. All of that led to Savage being re-instated later in 1991 as an active wrestler due to the overwhelming support of the fans. He won the WWE Title in 1992 as a babyface, so he came full circle in that year. Savage was my favorite wrestler growing up. I was 10 years old when he retired and I was so sad. I can remember being really upset about it. Little did I know that it was just a brilliant angle done to make him more of a sympathetic babyface.
