Although the name "Mega Maniacs" wasn't used until early 1993, the duo of Hulk Hogan and Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake had teamed up several times before, most notably in the main event of SummerSlam '89. Following their SummerSlam victory over Randy Savage and Zeus, Hogan and Beefcake went their separate ways again to focus on singles competition until tragedy struck Brutus roughly one year later.

While parasailing in July 1990, the real-life Ed Leslie suffered a life-threatening injury when a fellow parasailer crashed into his face. Leslie required emergency surgery that saw 100 metal plates used to restore his facial skeleton. Needless to say, Beefcake's wrestling career was in serious jeopardy.

By the time Brutus returned to the ring in '93, the Hulkster had taken a sabbatical from WWE but promised to return at WrestleMania IX as the tag team partner of his "Friend 'Til The End". Unfortunately for the newly-christened Mega Maniacs, their reunion was very short-lived.

The Maniacs failed to wrest the tag team titles away from Money, Inc. at WrestleMania, though Hogan did leave Caesar's Palace the WWF Champion. While Hogan only wrestled in one televised match after this (at the 1993 King Of The Ring), Beefcake faded away from WWE television and the Mega Maniacs soon became a distant memory.
