For better or worse, the WWE juggernaut is steamrolling into its fifth decade as the industry leader in sports entertainment, with signature events and superstars dominating the professional wrestling landscape, both for casual and dedicated fans.
Among the events that captures fans’ attention each year is the Royal Rumble, a WWE incarnation that combines drama, suspense, surprises and capital-M moments into one tidy package. Now in its 38th year, the Rumble has a storied history and a record book that is as varied as any other sport.
For a company that until recently eschewed its own history and longevity – anything that made it seem old – WWE has always leaned on the records and moments of previous Rumbles when it comes to building up each year’s iteration. Can a wrestler repeat their lengthy performance from last year? Will this superstar recapture the glory of a few years ago when they eliminated several top competitors?
The Royal Rumble is overloaded with statistics from top to bottom, perfect for announcers to hype and fans to fantasy book challenges to those records. The records also allow WWE to shine a spotlight on several wrestlers each year, even if they’re not successful in winning the Rumble.
Let’s dive in and take a look at the records that define the Royal Rumble. Some might be common knowledge, while others are a bit more nuanced.
Let’s get to it…

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin has won more Royal Rumble matches than anyone else, winning three times in 1997, 1998 and 2001.
However, we should note that nine other men have won the Rumble twice: Hulk Hogan (1990, 1991), Shawn Michaels (1995, 1996), John Cena (2008, 2013), Batista (2005, 2014), Triple H (2002, 2016), Randy Orton (2009, 2017), Edge (2010, 2021), Brock Lesnar (2003, 2022) and Cody Rhodes (2023, 2024). Four Rumble winners have won in consecutive years (Hogan, HBK, Austin and Rhodes).
It's scary to say this out loud, but those 10 men have won 21 of the 37 men’s Rumbles. Also of note: Brock had a 19-year gap between Rumble wins, which is a record.
Of this batch, Cena and (to a much lesser extent) Orton could tie Austin’s record with a shock win, Cody will otherwise be occupied at the Royal Rumble PLE.
