How and why WWE thought they could get away with a wrestler playing a character with learning difficulties €“- the clichéd €˜child in a man'€™s body€™ schtick -€“ is anyone'€™s guess.

Nick €˜Eugene€™ Dinsmore appeared on RAW as the excitable, €˜special€™ nephew of the heel general manager, Eric Bischoff in 2004. An exasperated Bisch would fob Eugene off on the snooty William Regal, who grew very fond of the younger man, which became the catalyst for a babyface turn on Bischoff. This would become the first of many occasions when Eugene would be used by others as a cheap means of getting over.

Dinsmore, a talented wrestler, worked himself into the ground playing this thankless character. It€™'s a testament to the sheer crapulence of the stories that even this, and the involvement of some of wrestling€™s biggest stars €“- Regal, Triple H, Hogan, Angle -€“ couldn'€™t save some of the worst and most offensive booking in wrestling history from screwing the pooch with Eugene.

For the most part, especially later on in his television life, the Eugene character existed to give emergency heat to any heel on the roster who fancied beating him up, and to any babyface who fancied stepping in to make the save. As a rule, the two would then feud in the foreground while Dinsmore, gurning frantically, clutched at his face and hair in the background. Not cool, WWE. Not cool at all.
