Rey Mysterio was long considered a giant killer during his WWE career. So much so that WWEs commentators used the expression David vs. Goliath to describe his matches countless times. One doesnt have to look far to see Rey Mysterio pulling a David in his wrestling career. Since hes one of the shortest wrestlers in WWE history, virtually all of his opponents have been bigger than him in terms of both height and weight. But where Mysterio has really demonstrated his similarity to David was by vanquishing wrestlers who literally towered over him. From Kane and Big Show to the Great Khali, Mysterio has defeated them all using his agility and technique to overcome his opponents superior size and strength. Like David with his slingshot, Mysterios immense lucha libre experience and cleverness allowed him to conquer one Goliath after another. This has allowed the masked man to be presented as the biggest underdog in WWE history, which must be exactly how the people of Davids day saw him as he faced off against Goliath. Finally, Mysterio defeating so many giants is symbolic of the smaller and more technically-skilled wrestlers becoming top draws in the place of the giants of yesteryear, while David defeating Goliath was symbolic of Judaism conquering Paganism. To that extent, both of these underdogs represent historic and fundamental change in their respective domains.
