From almost the very moment he swapped his role in MNM for a new surname and one of the coolest entrances in all of WWE, John Morrison - occasionally referred to as "the next Shawn Michaels" - was widely seen as a WWE Champion in waiting. As it turned out, he would be waiting for longer than he planned.

It was 2011 when Morrison, fresh from yet more tag team exploits with The Miz (and then even more with R-Truth) came closest to winning the title, when he fought then-champion Miz and John Cena in a triple threat steel cage match at Extreme Rules. Truth interfered and cost him the match, and Morrison soon after found himself lost in the shuffle, together with his two former tag team partners.
