10 WWE Stars Who Cemented The Intercontinental Title's Legacy

2. "Macho Man" Randy Savage

From the moment he arrived in WWE, it was clear that Randy Savage was destined for great things. He had a larger-than-life persona and instantly connected with fans. He was a star, that much even the most clueless of fans could see. By the time he sported his shimmering robes and added Miss Elizabeth to his act, he was well on his way to solidifying himself as one of the brightest stars of era. On February 8, 1986, Savage capped off an eventful first few months with the company by defeating the great Tito Santana to win the Intercontinental Championship. His reign would be the start of a Hall of Fame-worthy career and one of the greatest runs in company history. Over the course of his year-long stint with the title, Savage would compete against Santana in a series of rematches, George "the Animal" Steele in a storyline revolving around the beautiful Elizabeth and even the "Living Legend" Bruno Sammartino but it was his feud with Ricky Steamboat that would go on to define Savage's time as the No. 2 man in WWE. After severely injuring Steamboat's throat with the ring bell and an assist from the guardrail, Savage boasted about ending "The Dragon's" career. This, of course, motivated Steamboat to return and he did just that, defeating Savage in one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history. In defeat, Savage proved himself capable of taking the next step up the ladder and by the time the following year's sports-entertainment extravaganza ended, he would be the top dog in WWE. He never would have achieved that success, though, without proving himself while Intercontinental champion and helping to maintain the reputation of that title.
