10 WWE Stars Who Desperately Need New Gimmicks

7. Apollo Crews

Does Apollo Crews have a gimmick? The former Uhaa Nation is one of the company’s most aesthetically impressive guys, has athleticism for days and a smile that can melt hearts from a thousand feet. Not only that, but he also comes across as a super nice guy. It thus makes perfect sense that he has spent his three years on the main roster losing, losing and losing.

More so than anyone in the entire company, Apollo Crews needs a change. He needs a direction. He needs something to sink his teeth into, something beyond being super handsome and losing wrestling matches. Losing handicap matches against Sheamus almost certainly isn’t the way to go, but that’s WWE creative for you.

A lot of WWE superstars go through a number of gimmicks before settling on one, covering plenty of personality ground before feeling comfortable in their own skin. Apollo? He’s still at the starting line. He’s still the one-dimensional babyface that he was when he came up from NXT during the 2016 draft.

Not everyone gets to be a main event performer in WWE. Not everyone gets to be a larger than life character, a Bray Wyatt, an Undertaker, a Kane. The old ‘be yourself but more’ is generally understood to be the way to go, but that doesn’t guarantee another Stone Cold Steve Austin, another Rock. Over the last three years, it really feels as though Apollo Crews has been himself but dialed down. Something needs to change for the big man before it is too late.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
