10 WWE Stars Who Only Won Gold Because Of The Brand Split

One major thing that World Wrestling Entertainment will need to be careful with in putting together the 2016 brand split is the treatment of the tag division. Whilst the division is in good health in 2016, the previous split saw the dawning of some extremely dark times for tag team wrestling in WWE.

The division is strong enough to sustain one set of belts, but two? No, never, nope. What two sets of straps meant was a conveyor belt of thrown together teams winning the titles, with such combinations as William Regal & Tajiri, Ric Flair & Roddy Piper, and Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes taking home the gold. Both RAW and SmackDown also underwent phases where a new team would debut, immediately become the #1 contenders, lose their title match and never be seen again.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the case with Deuce 'n' Domino. The greasy duo arrived in 2007 and almost instantly put an end to Paul London and Brian Kendrick's record-breaking title reign. Once they had defended the straps against the former-champions it quickly became apparent that they had no other teams to feud with. The titles were defended on PPV just once, against Sgt. Slaughter and Jimmy Snuka of all combos.

The RAW tag titles were defended on all the PPVs of this run however. It was clear who the secondary tag champions were, and without the split this reign would never have happened. Instead, we would have had a summer of Hardy Boyz vs. London & Kendrick.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
