After The Rock lost the Intercontinental Title, the belt's path took a turn for the worse. In 1999, the belt changed hands constantly, with men like Val Venis and Road Dogg having brief runs with the championship.

Jeff Jarrett was in his record-setting sixth run with the belt when he started a feud with Chyna, and "The Ninth Wonder of the World" beat him at No Mercy 1999 to become the first and only woman to claim the title.

Still, she lost momentum after winning, and fans lost interest. Soon, she would lost the title to company newcomer Chris Jericho.

Jericho wouldn't bring stability to the title in terms of the frequency of changes - it still seemed to switch hands every month. Instead, Y2J made it the "workers' title" again, ushering in a new era of great matches for the belt with the likes of Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero.

It was in 2000 that WWE finally overtook WCW as the company with the best workers, and most of those world-class talents vied for the Intercontinental Title - with Jericho at the forefront.
