Sgt. Slaughter is the most military thing in the history of professional wrestling. In fact, if you think of military and wrestling, Sarge is going to be the weird thing that pops directly into your head. Slaughter's entire gimmick was that of a tough-as-nails drill sergeant, and my generation will mostly remember his as a damn turncoat in 1991.

Before his pro wrestling career began Slaughter enlisted in the US Marine Corps, and was actually a legitimate drill instructor in Parris Island, South Carolina. Supposedly it was here that Sarge earned the moniker 'Sgt. Slaughter'.

It isn't really the friendliest of monikers, so I can only assume that the young Robert Remus was quite the sergeant. He would go on to become one of the most iconic professional wrestlers of the 1980s.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
