Stone Cold Steve Austin finally came to prominence in the WWF in 1996, winning the King of the Ring tournament and uttering the t-shirt slogan that would go on to change everything, but outside of this you can't really say that 1996 was his year. The PPV after winning the crown he went up against Marc Mero, and he didn't even make the main show of SummerSlam that year.

Austin would have likely been in the match, but he wouldn't have been the man walking out with the briefcase. My guess is that the briefcase would have been traded in for an updated golden version, as Goldust would most likely have walked away the winner. Goldie had a great run as Intercontinental Champion at the start of the year, and was around the main event scene throughout.

Both The Bizarre One and Stone Cold had issues with Marc Mero through the year, so the Wildman would also have found himself in the match. The other four spots are a little harder to fill, with no obvious candidates jumping out. Captain Mid Card Savio Vega gets another shot at the briefcase he came so close to in 1995, along with Justin Bradshaw, Vader and, I don't know, Skip?

Yeah, let's go with Skip.
