In many ways, the King of the Ring tournament in the 1990s was something of a precursor of the Money in the Bank match. It showcased some of the array of talent on the WWF's hands (for better or worse), and acted as something of a springboard for whomever the crown was bestowed upon.

Sometimes this worked, other times it didn't.

The 1997 winner was none other than Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and he is the clear favourite to win a hypothetical 1997 Money in the Bank match. People say that he was somewhat buried after the Curtain Call incident, but his coronation was a clear sign that this wasn't truly the case. WWF obviously had plans for their eventual C.O.O, kayfabe-breaking or not.

The man Helmsley defeated in the final of the King of the Ring would join him in the ladder match, and the finish would surely have been Mankind taking some sort of preposterous bump off the ladder allowing HHH to grab the case.

These two would have been the focus of the match, so the other five participants are mere background music. Let's go with Ken Shamrock, D'Lo Brown, Owen Hart, Savio Vega and Ahmed Johnson.
