10 WWE Stars Whose Best Match Came Against Bret Hart
The best there ever will be at getting the very best out of his opponents.
Sometimes, the best gimmicks are those that are based on an element of truth.
And when it comes to Bret Hart, you could certainly say that was the case, because his claim to be “best there is, best there was, and best there ever will be” was likely more than just pro wrestling bravado.
The Hitman was genuinely one of the greatest workers of a generation, perhaps even the best of all-time. World, Tag Team, and Intercontinental titles, a King of the Ring and Royal Rumble winner, as well as his haul of five prestigious Slammy awards - he won just about everything there is to win in WWE.
Even when he wasn’t winning titles and adding other accolades to his ever-growing CV, he was still busy making his opponents look the best they are, the best they were, and the best they ever would be. So much so that plenty of stars have enjoyed the finest matches of their careers against The Excellence of Execution, and this article counts down some such names.
To celebrate Bret Hart's arrival in WCPW, here's the ten wrestlers who benefitted the most from grappling the WWE Hall of Famer.
For the sake of clarity, we’ll only be including his WWE run and matches in singles competition, otherwise we could be here all day…
10. Yokozuna
As a near-600lb sumo wrestler whose finishing move was
to thrust himself off the middle rope and drop his full body weight on your
chest, Yokozuna was certainly effective in portraying the monster heel.
However, that same size meant that he wasn’t necessarily known for turning out
five-star performances.
Against Bret Hart, though, even the most miserly of critics would have to admit that we saw some pretty decent showings from the big man. All told, they were likely the best of his entire career.
Yokozuna and Bret faced off on a handful of occasions, with their first match arriving at WrestleMania IX. But it was their meeting 12 months down the line, at WrestleMania X, that will be far more fondly remembered. The duo went just over ten minutes as Bret reclaimed the WWF Championship, in what was either man’s second match of the evening (Bret having earlier put on a classic with his brother and Yokozuna defeating Lex Luger).
Plus, unlike their WrestleMania IX meeting, this one wasn’t tainted by a nine-second Hulk Hogan bout in the immediate aftermath.
Bret Hart vs Yokozuna at WrestleMania X was by no means one of Bret’s top matches, but you'd be hard-pushed to find a better Yoko bout.
