WWE veteran Rhyno had competed in several NXT matches in 2015, primarily to work with - and put over - younger talent. By December, he had made his way back to the main roster, but it was a short run centered around a program pitting ECW originals against The Wyatt Family. He was soon gone again.

In July of 2016, though, he re-appeared on NXT without warning. During a match pitting The Hype Bros against Blake and Murphy, Rhyno did a run-in, attacking everyone in sight. A heel again, Rhyno said he was back to dominate NXT, but he soon lost a match to brand champion Samoa Joe.

That proved to be Rhyno's last NXT appearance. Rather than continue on his quest, he turned up as a babyface on Smackdown for a brief rivalry with Heath Slater, followed by a partnership that saw the pair crowned the first-ever Smackdown Tag Team Champions. NXT was safe once again.
