10 WWE SummerSlam Records You Didn’t Know About
9. Intercontinental Free-For-All

While the PPV’s been something of graveyard for
challengers to the WWE Title, in rather stark contrast, SummerSlam’s been the
place to be if you’re after an Intercontinental Championship win.
Of the 22 IC title matches that we’ve seen at the PPV over the years, 14 have seen new champions crowned. That includes a run of a dozen title changes in the first 14 Intercontinental Championship bouts that SummerSlam staged between its 1988 debut and 2002.
Compare that to the first 14 WWE Championship bouts at SummerSlam, and you have almost a complete role reversal with 11 successful title defences.
As well as being a cool piece of trivia, this may offer us further evidence that perhaps SummerSlam isn’t the show for the major pay-offs to angles and storylines. Instead, though, they’ll throw us an Intercontinental title change to keep things lively and shake things up.
This year, I’d initially have been tempted to tip The Miz to retain his title when he goes up against Apollo Crews, but having looked back through the history books, don’t be surprised to see the SummerSlam trend of the crowning of a new Intercontinental Champion continue at the 2016 event.
