8. Joey Styles
WWEYes, youre right of course; Joey Styles is not a professional wrestler (or even, for that matter, a sports entertainer). He is, however, one of the best play-by-play announcers of all time. Styles, (along with Jim Ross and the great Gordon Solie) is usually listed as number three in the modern fans Top 5 Announcers Ever list (although I confess that I learned this via an online poll on my Facebook newsfeed and not an official source). Considering that Styles most famous run (as the voice of renegade wrestling brand ECW) lasted less than a decade and also that he usually called matches entirely on his own (without the aid of a colour commentator) that is nothing short of a phenomenal achievement. Quite why WWE would keep Michael Cole (and his vintage bag of clichés) as the voice of the company when Styles is actually under contract to the WWE is simply beyond the comprehension of a lot of fans (including myself). Every time JBL launches another embarrassing eye-roller, many fans cringe. Jerry Lawler is still doing it the right way, of course, but he is usually toned down in the mix of spittle and bullsh!t that constantly streams forth from JBL and Cole, both of whom are, frankly, awful. Joey Styles could provide the classic calls needed to accompany great WWE moments, something sorely lacking in todays product. Jim Ross voice helped make the Attitude Era great; it was the icing on the cake, every single time. Conversely, the PG/Reality era has no real voice to speak of. Cast your mind back to Daniel Bryans victory at WrestleMania XXX, what was the call that accompanied this incredible moment? Dont remember? Me neither. Put simply, that has to change.
