Shawn Michaels had many WrestleMania moments in his illustrious career, from his absolute classic with Kurt Angle at 21 to blowing everyone away with his performance in his ladder match with Razor Ramon at 10 to The Undertaker retiring him at 26. He was supposed to have one more moment/match in the history books though.

In 1996 The Heartbreak Kid headlined WrestleMania for the first time in the famous Iron Man match where he fulfilled his boyhood dream of winning the WWF Championship. Shawn and Bret were scheduled to go at it again the following year at WrestleMania 13 but Shawn controversially dropped out of the match/event and vacated the title in February 1997 in his famous “lost my smile” promo after suffering a knee injury where he had to contemplate retiring. Many in wrestling didn’t believe him at the time, convinced he simply didn’t want to return the favour and lose to Bret at the event.

So all Shawn did at WrestleMania 13 was provide commentary for the main event whilst an irked Bret made the best of a bad situation, going on to have a classic with Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 in a Submission match which changed the landscape of the WWF forever.
