In the summer of 1992, WWE was tasked with producing its first Pay-Per-View event without Hulk Hogan. In his stead, Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior battled for the WWF Championship at SummerSlam - but it was Bret Hart who would truly take the WWF torch into the New Generation.

As Intercontinental Champion, Bret successfully lobbied for his match against brother-in-law and hometown hero, Davey Boy Smith, to close the show at Wembley Stadium. In the main event of the largest show since WrestleMania III, Bret lost the title to Davey Boy after a 25 minute instant classic. Many considered it the greatest match in company history, at least since Savage and Steamboat battled for the same title at WrestleMania III.

Although London witnessed the crowning of a new champion amidst a rare-for-the-time display of fireworks and pyrotechnics, SummerSlam '92 was the Hitman's crowning moment. Bret had laid out the entire match beforehand and ultimately carried a less than prepared British Bulldog through it.

Ironically, the victorious Bulldog was released shortly after SummerSlam; around the same time, Bret won his first WWF Championship.
