Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty were a team Vince McMahon really wanted. He had pursued the pair for over a year. In 1987 realising that the AWA was in terminal decline the then-‘Midnight’ Rockers agreed to join WWE. The team did not make a great first impression. They were fired after a few weeks for partying and unprofessional behaviour.

Vince had a soft spot for the team and in 1988 offered them a second chance. The gamble paid off. The Rockers became hugely popular and Shawn Michaels was the standout. Despite his clear potential though McMahon was fond of the team and was thus reluctant to split up the popular pairing.

In December 1991 Vince was finally ready to pull the trigger on the split. This was in part due to Michaels and Jannetty‘s relationship deteriorating backstage. This breakdown in communication led to at least one drunken brawl.

The kayfabe split would follow, during an episode of The Barbers Shop. Michaels sent Jannetty crashing through the ‘Barbers Shop’ window. The moment became one of the most iconic in WWE history.
