The most misused star of the last decade? Possibly. And this didn’t help.

Despite questionable booking that saw Bray Wyatt’s main event potential diminish year on year, the ‘Eater of Worlds’ forged a genuine connection with the WWE fan base who were rooting for him to become the ‘next Undertaker’. Spooky nonsense aside, Wyatt seemed like a wasted opportunity, until 2016 saw Randy Orton welcomed into the Wyatt family.

An excellent story, which threatened to make Luke Harper the actual breakout star of the group, WWE plotted a decent path to WrestleMania 33 when Orton won the Rumble. The following month, Wyatt shocked the world by clean pinning both John Cena and AJ Styles inside the Elimination Chamber to become the WWE Champion.

The fan reaction was incredible, and the following week he received a standing ovation from the fans who had wanted to see Bray get his big moment for years. Still trying to play the heel in a feud which soon fell off the rails, Wyatt was seemingly a made man as WWE Champion and a logical victory over Orton would have cemented his status at the top of the mountain.

But he lost. In ten minutes. Even after projecting ‘spooky bugs’ onto the canvas.

The damage was irreparable, and Wyatt, who had lost countless big matches before, just came across as a choke artist. Considering the groundswell of support that greeted his title win, WWE creative should have changed course. But then again, they are hardly the best at reading the room, are they?
