A world away from being the figurehead of All Elite Wrestling, the nowadays Jon Moxley was once the most popular babyface in WWE.

As the de facto leader of The Shield, Ambrose was positioned as the singles star of the group, but once the fall out of their split in 2014 was over, it was clear that Vince McMahon saw the ‘Lunatic Fringe’ as the lesser of the three. Seth Rollins was pushed as the new heel World Champion, whereas Roman Reigns was rammed down the fans throats as the new John Cena.

The fans continued to rally behind Ambrose, who enjoyed some secondary title success and a poorly received WrestleMania match with Brock Lesnar. But Ambrose was still the fans choice, and when he won Money in the Bank in 2016 and cashed in on his old enemy, Rollins, a new era began.

WWE headed for a new brand split, with Dean sitting on top of the exciting Smackdown! LIVE roster as the champion. Better still, with Rollins and Reigns on RAW, it felt like he would be given the room to become the main event star he should have been.

The reign, however, was a bit meh. The Shield triple threat was wasted on a B-level Pay Per View, and then Ambrose feuded with an uninteresting Dolph Ziggler. Less than three months after winning the WWE Championship, the Ohio native dropped it to AJ Styles.

He never held it again.
