10 WWE Undercard Matches That Outshone The Royal Rumble

1. Diesel Vs. Bret Hart (1995)

Truth be told, the 1995 Rumble was a bit naff. Yes, the narrative that Shawn Michaels went from #1 to the end is exciting, but it's hard to keep the thrill going for long upon realising the Royal Rumble lasted just over 38 minutes. To put it into perspective, that's just around 10 minutes longer than that Triple H vs. Cactus Jack effort examined in the last entry.

Incredibly, it was only 10 mins longer than the WWF Title match that had happened earlier between Bret Hart and Diesel too. Part of Bret's legacy was giving Kevin Nash some of his best matches on top in the mid-90's, and this was one of them. It was also Diesel's first pay-per-view match as champion, so he was eager to impress.

Ignore the interference and cop out ending (a draw), because there's a sublime 'big man vs. little man' story waiting beneath the surface. It's true that HBK winning the Rumble was big news, however it couldn't hold a candle to the quality of Bret's Diesel-enhancing performance.
