10 WWE WrestleMania Matches That Infuriated The Fans

2. Goldberg Vs. Brock Lesnar - WrestleMania XX

Not the second WrestleMania match between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg, certainly not. These two should only ever be involved in five-minute thrillers that involve big moves and nothing else. No need for psychology beyond ‘must hit big move before big move hit me’. Wrestling should be simple, after all.

The first WrestleMania meeting between the two behemoths is famous only for the vitriolic crowd reaction. Everyone and their dog knew that the two former champions were on their way out of the company as soon as the match was done, and they weren’t going to miss an opportunity to sing about it. From beginning to end, this was an exercise in a crowd not giving two hoots about what was happening in the ring.

With that in mind, did the match disappoint the fans? Like all questions, the answer is 50% yes, 50% no. On the one hand, the anger and disappointment had nothing to do with the action inside the ring and everything to do with the politics outside of it. On the other, the fans were reacting at the moment itself, to a match that nobody wanted to see and nobody enjoyed watching. This was one of the first examples of a crowd hijacking a major WrestleMania match in rebellion.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
