‘Once in a Lifetime’, they said. The dream match to end all dream matches, headlining the biggest show in the history of the business. ‘Once in a Lifetime’ was the WrestleMania XXVIII tagline, but it was bigger than that. It really did feel like a special occasion.

It was so special, they had to do it twice.

By the time John Cena and The Rock faced off in the second straight WrestleMania main event, it was a struggle to find a single fan that cared. It was clear to everyone that Cena was going to win, that the show would end with The Rock putting Big Match John over by raising his hand, and the whole two-year saga (longer, if media appearances are taken into account) would end with 50/50 booking at its most predictable.

Just because everyone saw it coming doesn’t mean that the crowd was apathetic to it. Cena’s victory was met with a mixture of frustration and disinterest, while the real booing was held off for the moment Rocky held Cena’s hand aloft. Nobody was interested in seeing it, and the New Jersey crowd wasn’t about to let the company get away with it. Once in a lifetime, indeed…

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
