Pro wrestling is capable of incredible things. This is a supernatural world, where throwing someone into a set of ropes results in them bouncing off said ropes, where morticians shoot lightning bolts and wearing a scary mask makes you nigh on impervious to pain. In professional wrestling, anything is impossible.

With that in mind, making Vince McMahon somewhat sympathetic in Bret Hart’s great revenge for Montreal might be the most incredible. It sounds preposterous but that is exactly what happened at WrestleMania XXVI, as one of the most anticipated grudge matches in wrestling history devolved into a squash that redefined the word 'boring'. And the crowd, understandably, hated it.

Was WWE right in having Bret Hart beat the tar out of Vince McMahon before making the boss tap out to the Sharpshooter? Of course, but it didn’t need to go on for just over 11 excruciating minutes. The crowd was utterly apathetic by the end of this. What should have been a memorable moment of wrestling catharsis became an exercise in ennui.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
