4. John Cena Vs. Triple H - WrestleMania 22

It is hard to imagine a crowd baying for a Triple H championship win in the modern age, but some fans seriously don’t realise how hated John Cena was back in 2006. This was Super Cena at his peak, a one-dimensional character who was extremely limited in the ring and beloved by management. Never has the number one babyface in a wrestling company been so vehemently abhorred by the audience.

The Chicago crowd was desperate for Triple H to win. Hunter himself wasn’t exactly beloved by the crowd. Just a couple of months earlier he had been embroiled in a blood feud with Ric Flair, leaving Naitch a bloody mess on a number of occasions. It is a testament to how hated Cena was that this crowd was longing for The Game to come out on top.

Cena not only won the match, but he did so by making Triple H tap out. Cena winning matches was bad enough, doing so by submission was always an extra bonus for the vitriolic fanbase. The Chicago crowd was as furious as Chicago crowds tend to be, but WWE did its best to dampen the anger by playing Cena’s music at an incredibly high volume.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
