While most cases of Vince McMahon being unable to control a wrestler come from the performer leveraging their drawing power against the Chairman, the Ultimate Warrior's is a little different. In this situation, McMahon couldn't keep his in line for one simple reason: Warrior was nuts. Jim Hellwig's unchecked energy, wild gesticulations, and rambling promos were nothing but an exaggerated reflection of the man behind the gimmick.

He regularly clashed with McMahon whenever Vince's visions for his career didn't align with Warrior's own, and his disdain for Hulk Hogan is well known. It all boiled over when Warrior wrote to Vince demanding a pay raise in 1991, with McMahon bowing to his star's demands at first, before recognising his mistake and suspending him following SummerSlam.

WWE refused Warrior's request to be released, but eventually brought him back for WrestleMania VIII. McMahon consented to giving Warrior a degree of creative control at this time, but was released for using human growth hormones at the height of WWE's steroid crackdown. Vince once again tried to control the turbulent star when he made his second return in 1996, but this ended in tears when Warrior no-showed a series of house shows.
