10 WWE Wrestlers Vince McMahon Couldn't Control

5. Steve Austin

'Stone Cold' Steve Austin was the Attitude Era's most rebellious character, but there were times when he was just as uncontrollable behind the scenes as he was onscreen. While he and Vince McMahon have usually enjoyed a positive working relationship, they've hit numerous rocky points over the years, and the Chairman could never truly curb Austin's political instincts.

While the likes of Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan are routinely criticised as backstage schemers, Austin gets off lightly. This is in spite of accounts suggesting he blocked Mick Foley from WrestleMania XV's main event, vetoed proposed feuds with Billy Gunn and Jeff Jarrett, and refused to put the surging Brock Lesnar over in 2002, prompting his most famous act of rebellion.

'Stone Cold' walked out on WWE shortly after, citing poor creative direction as his reason. McMahon publicly buried Austin for "taking his ball and going home", and 'The Rattlesnake' sat the rest of the year out, though he and Vince eventually resolved their differences. He returned to a hefty $250,000 fine in 2003, but while Austin remains in the company's good graces today, he's never shy of criticising their product, decisions, or McMahon himself.
