Tommaso Ciampa has famously said that he doesn’t want to leave NXT, but he’s got nothing left to do there. Ever since he came back from his potential career-ending neck injury, NXT wasted the two natural angles that he had left to tell. His return to NXT should have involved his feud with Gargano, with the blowoff match happening as soon as they were back together, instead of waiting for months for the feud to become less natural.

Additionally, pairing him with Adam Cole in WarGames and at Takeover Portland didn’t have the weight to it that it should have, it never felt like the narrative was built around his neck and his love of that belt as much as it could have been. The main event of Portland was pretty good, but lacked that edge to make it an all-time classic that a more thoughtful angle could have gotten out of it.

Since losing to Karrion Kross at TakeOver In Your House, Ciampa’s been largely absent from NXT and posted about creative having “nothing for him.” He needs a surge of momentum and his towering work as a heel means that becoming a brutal enforcer of RETRIBUTION, angry at the system that broke his neck and left him at home, could be the perfect way for him to use the rest of his career.
