Fans didn't really get to see tag team partners work against one another back in 1989. Come to think of it, nobody really gets to see much of that today until duos split. Ax and Smash didn't end their union before the '89 Royal Rumble, but they did draw #1 and #2 respectively come bell time. That was unexpected.

Keep in mind that this was just the second televised Rumble, and the first on pay-per-view. So, sticking tag partners out there against each other was a clever way to sell the idea that anything can happen in this exciting new match type. Seeing André the Giant amble out as #3 got a reaction from fans in Houston too.

That was a lot of meat in the one ring.

The WWF successfully put over how unpredictable and unfortunate (if you're Demolition) the Rumble drawings can be. They'd play around with the thought of partners going at it in years to come, but Ax and Smash were the first to do so.
