Drew McIntyre morphed into a 10-year old version of himself on Christmas morning upon winning the 2020 Royal Rumble. Spinning around in ecstasy, the Scot pushed his way into the hearts of wrestling fans who understood his passion. Then, COVID hit and McIntyre watched a surefire WrestleMania 36 title win in front of a sold out stadium melt away in front of him. In typically staunch fashion, the newly minted babyface refused to feel sorry for himself.

If anything, Drew wanted to give back.

His interviews heading into 'Mania 36 were tinged with sadness but realism. People around the world had it much harder than him, and he was still going to win the big one on WWE's grand stage. That title change was a poorly kept secret during the build, but nobody cared. They were too busy appreciating the chance to switch off from uncertainty and fear, then switch on some sugary sweet WWE goodness. When they did, McIntyre was there to reach out and touch their souls.

In an unscripted moment, the new WWE Champ reached a hand out to the camera lens and thanked people for following his journey. It'd been a tough one. Drew was cut loose in 2014, and he had to pull himself up by the bootstraps via the indy scene. A 2017 comeback followed, then 2020's mega-push began. It's just a shame it had to happen in front of exactly zero fans there live in the stands.

Regardless, McIntyre putting himself second and everyone else first turned him into a true hero of the people. What a guy.
